No joke. That was the name of the town. The even have a statue in their namesake's honor.
And a "Hitchhiking Permitted" sign on the county road. First time I ever saw one of those. Wonder what George would have thought.

A statue, eh?
I'm sure it can't beat the humungo Sam Houston statue in Huntsville.
There is even a billboard in Madisonville stating: "Visit Huntsville. We have the largest statue of an American Hero in the world!"
In the world??!!!
Obviously. Like the French are going to erect a statue of Sam Houston!
